Let's talk about tonight's ep, 3x07, The Perfect Mark!
~Avast! Here there be spoilers....~
Come on in! The water's warm. :D

I will be hanging out in the IRC chat channel for a short period while it airs. If you're around, come in and say hi if you want. Reminder that the channel is always there for people whenever they want it. :)

FLAILS AND SQUEAKS.

I mean, the A-plot with the number, though nicely twisty, had an ending you could sort of see coming for the number himself.

BUT EVERYTHING ELSE. AAAAAAAAAA.

I AM SO FUCKING HAPPY ABOUT THAT TWIST WITH NATALIE OMFG THAT WAS AMAZING.

Of course Laskey dies right as he realizes HR was bullshit.

YAY TERNEY IS DEAD. ALSO CARTER KNOWS THAT QUINN IS THE HEAD OF HR NOW OMFG SHIT'S GONNA GET FUCKING REAL.

Shaw fucking loves Carter and it is awesome.

Elias and Carter having an informative little chat. And he shares his wine with her. Awww. :) (Your boyfriend is gonna be super jealous, Elias. Where is he, anyway? Off causing mayhem in your name, I presume.)

Looooool, Reese and Carter's fistbump. SUCH BROS.

Fusco and Carter are also such bros. The bickering as they fake the crime scene. AMAZING.

Wonder if Root will convince Harold about what's coming with the Machine. 'Cause at this point, I think she's kinda got a point...

BEST LINE: "Will you at least let me call Natalie before you kill me or arrest me or put me in a well in your basement?" I kinda love him for that alone. Glad someone finally commented on Reese's super creepiness. XD

WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT PROMO FOR NEXT WEEK.

SHOW.

SHOW.

WHAT. WHAT ARE YOU DOING.

SHOW.

Potentially I have a lot to say about the episode, but let's stick with a) I liked it! and b) wow, Root and her "Mom still loves both of us" comment. Fascinating family dynamics there. Because, really, I think she's right; Harold used to be Daddy to the Machine, and he's still trying to play a paternal role, even to Root, but she's seeing them more as siblings, and considering the Machine's new powers "Mom" is about the most beneficent role it could play. (Or "she," but I noticed even Root was switching back and forth, and let's not have more pronoun confusion than we need to.)

If Root and Harold are siblings, it goes nicely with the Reese and Shaw dynamic, and the Carter and Fusco one. And I saw a hint of Carter acting maternally toward Laskey, in the sense of grounding him for bad behavior. If he'd survived, and they'd been able to work together to bring down HR, I bet he'd have been coming over for dinner once a week. Anyway, there aren't a lot of moms on this show, so Carter and the Machineā€¦ have things in common? And is this becoming a show about creating new families? I'm wondering how much family stuff we're going to see in the flashbacks. We had a little bit of Shaw's childhood already.

*carefully doesn't even comment on implications of the promo*

Oh, how did I miss that about Root's use of pronouns? (Probably because I never transitioned to using "she" myself -- not out any desire to deny the Machine a gender, but because Root's narration strikes me as unreliable.) That's fascinating.

As is her calling the Machine mom, unquestionably.

-Carter's startled little smile when she tasted the wine was so beautiful, and I really really hope I don't need to worry that Elias is getting to her. Except it would be so interesting if he were getting to her, because Carter should get all the plot -- not that it seems like she's going to lack for it in the near future! -- but see, I also want her life to be awesome, and Carter's honor, battered as it may be, is such an integral part of who she is! SO MY EMOTIONS ARE COMPLICATED. But I love her telling Terney to be a cop, oh my gosh.

-What is it with this season and terrible POIs we're supposed to sympathize with? I was so bemused when it turned out that his love for Natalie was true. He completely deserved what he got: seriously, they met when she came to him for hypnotherapy? Talk about an ethics violation. Like, holy shit. The one nice thing I can say about this storyline is that if he actually did turn over a new leaf, I would be really happy about that, because this show has way too many men pinning their morality on the women in their lives, and it would be refreshing if for once a guy just decided to shape up because, you know, it's better to.

-My feelings about Root and Finch and the Machine are in such a tangle right now: I kind of can't decide which of them I find the most viscerally terrifying. *flails* Is he supposed to remind us of early S2 Root? Because he's really having that effect on me, particularly in the way he seems to imagine that she'll come around to his point of view if he just wants it enough. I am more than ever convinced that he is really rather desperately afraid; it does not seem to me that he's thinking very clearly.

I think Harold is truly and utterly befuddled with his hands wrapped tightly about the tiger by the tail. He simply cannot make himself get rid of her effectively even though she's a danger to the world, but he doesn't know how to make her less dangerous either, so he's in quite a pickle in all quarters. She's nuclear, and while that could be a powerhouse of energy for so much good, there's absolutely no reason for him to believe her that she's not going to detonate half the planet either. And, really, we don't know that either, do we?

We're back to one of the many, many quandaries this show is mirroring in our real world of safety vs liberty, security vs uncertainty, protection vs oppression.

I am finding it really interesting that Carter's tiger is still meeting her in that creepy basement of echos. We all know he's not going to be content to stay in the shadows.

Whatcha want to bet that both Root and Elias make grand reentries into the world in the same ep?

He simply cannot make himself get rid of her effectively even though she's a danger to the world, but he doesn't know how to make her less dangerous either...

I can just imagine a conversation between Finch and Reese in which Reese says "you know, I could take her out and kill her to solve the whole problem for you" and Finch just shuddering and saying no.

Yes, just because she did what the Machine wanted and saved the hacker brother guy doesn't mean Root is now someone to be fully trusted or that she's turned into a force for good. We only have her word for it that she's doing exactly what the Machine wants her to do, don't we? More specifically, as long as the Machine tells her to do things that serve her purpose or put her in a good light, I'm sure she's happy to go along, but if it should be doing what Finch said, that it's allowed him to imprison her in the library, she's not going to be so happy, is she?

I think she'd be willing to do what the Machine wants if it is to stay with Harold, though it would chafe, but ... we don't know that TM's motives are what we'd call "good" either in all areas, depending on our viewpoint after all. She could do EXACTLY as TM wants and Harold still might be appalled at its agenda.

As we might. It's nice to think TM's got our life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness up there as ultimate priorities, but no matter how benevolent the power, we're never going to be 100% happy or in agreement with policies placed by authority on high above us, and we don't know what areas we'll clash on eventually.

I think we're supposed to be ambiguously twisting between reassured that TM's got our back and trepidation because TM's got all this power, and what if "having our back" costs us more than we want to give?

Oh, what an evocative way of putting it!

And no bets on Root & Elias -- I have enough to worry about just from the promo! *jitters*
