Little headcanons!

We all have headcanons, of course, and I am super interested in hearing them. But for this topic, I am specifically super interested in hearing all the little details. Like, do you think Harold prefers cherry jam to grape? What's Reese's favorite type of candy?* Is Carter the best at Sudoku? Stuff like that!

(*I feel like even if it isn't peanut butter cups, he'd pretend like it was just to see what Harold would do/say. And for my part I really hope Harold would just calmly tell him to go away for a bit while he processed the fact that he actually likes such a ridiculous human being.)

Are you kidding? Harold is still fannish. He torrents Doctor Who and gets into fights on the internet over how well done the new Star Trek movies were.

(Not at all.)

aprilvalentine: (Reese and Finch on bench)

[personal profile] aprilvalentine 2013-09-02 07:39 am (UTC)(link)
Oh.... maybe he has one of my old zines! I can imagine him keeping them in the library way back somewhere John probably hasn't found yet. But one day, he does of course. "What are these, Finch?" "They're called fanzines, John. Star Trek fans produced them when there were no more episodes to watch. They created their own stories." "Hmmm... strange." "Not really. Look at this one! It's really good... " And that's when he picks up "Gateway" my zine with Trek fic in the vein of Twilight Zone and Outer Limits. "This one is really unusual. I've read it many times." And Reese just shakes his head, but makes sure it's up on a high shelf where Bear can't get it after he's doing paging through it.

Sigh...

Here's one from me while I percolate some others: Reese really, really wants to be a dad. More than just a passing desire, he aches to be able to teach a little person how to ride a bike and tie their shoelaces and stay safe and sound and protect themselves from all the bad things in the world.

ohhhhh yeah I totally agree. I bet he has loads of manpain about it, about the selfishness of bringing a wee human into the world when he might die any time because his job is dangerous! And then the wee human would be alooooone.

That's not canon?

But yes, and ow.

Finch seems content to be Uncle Harold most of the time - the fact that the Machine is sort-of turning into his sentient daughter is clearly freaking him out just a little.

The only way to make this worse is if you imagine he never *let* himself want that in the years he was at the CIA -- and then Leila brought everything to the surface, all the things he buried deep down when he left Jessica behind. He let himself pretend a little, with the diapers and the baby carrier, but it was already too late. The whole thing with Elias was just proof.

Someone else suggested Leon gets called in every time his number comes up. Which he would probably agree to in that it gives him quality time with Bear, the Library ramen stash, and Finch's computers.

One thing I wonder about but haven't totally answered in my head canon, is what ever happened to the bodyguards Finch so obviously had in the pilot? You'd think they'd come in handy for doing certain things, driving him around at least, even now. Did he let them go once he found Reese or are they lurking somewhere in the background and we just never see them?

Haha! I read a fic where they were still around, just doing menial tasks. I can't for the life of me remember what fic it was, but it made me laugh.

Yeah, or, what other employees in Finch's life must have odd experiences. House maids and cleaners for his various safe houses? The car service employees? I bet there's a whole army of working class people who've had to sign Finch's NDAs and have the WEIRDEST lives (and also the biggest paychecks).

Maybe they're cleaning the library? :P

No, I've wondered this too. But he was careful not to call himself "Mr. Finch" within earshot of them, so presumably they belong to one of his established billionaire identities, maybe one that he doesn't use on any of the number cases (Harold Flamingo) and he still trots them out on occasion and pays them huge salaries and they've seen John striding around with him now and then and are immensely jealous because he was Their Boss Dammit.

Yeah, I saw them show up in a couple of very early fics (by, um, x_art or something like that). I've though that Finch hired them for just that short period, because he was a lot more worried about Reese than he pretended to be, and then dropped them once Reese was on board and seemed trustworthy (to a degree, anyway. Finch must have the most intricate mental hierarchy of trust ever.)

I can see Fusco being the Sudoku fiend in the precinct, actually - he started out by filling in the ones in the Ledger's funny pages, and now he is pretty good at them. Carter is more into crosswords.

Aw yiis. He probably *knew* Mitnick and the other boys in the band.

Okay, so maybe this is already sort of canon, considering how Finch seemed so delighted (in his low-key way) in the back of that taxicab in C.O.D., but I think Finch really, really likes driving. Being in a car, in general, but especially actually driving: the rote of it, and fiddling with the radio, and after his injuries, having such physical control.
In the rest of my headcanon, that's what he and Nathan did occasionally in their free time, when they were off exams or Finch wasn't tinkering with code and Nathan wasn't otherwise occupied by his probably near-constant dating life: drive. Just, aimless, around Boston, because they could, not really talking because there's something about the low rumble-roar of the engine that fills up the silence that way, and maybe Finch indulges Nathan when he puts weird music on the radio, or maybe Nathan indulges Finch when he sets it on a baseball game, which Nathan thinks is the most boring game ever. *smacks head*

So, maybe this is partially inspired by Sara's Knickknacks, which, by the way, is totally great. I envision that, despite Reese saying in Super that he travelled light, Reese rather likes collecting things. More than just guns, he'd like to collect maybe CDs or knickknacks or fancy dinner recipes. But he resists the lure of sentiment, at least until he starts a relationship with Finch. And he starts collecting. Like, if they go see a movie or eat out, Reese keeps the ticket stubs or the receipts. He'd really like to track down and collect things like the security footage of their first kiss, but he manages to resist, instead only keeping the things that fall naturally into his hands, like the tickets to the museum Finch dragged him to, or the parking ticket they got because they were too busy making out in the backseat. And then he locks them all away in a little box and never actually allows himself the indulgence of looking inside, other than to put more stuff in there; but he likes knowing that all those fragments of his and Finch's relationship are there, proof, safe under the bed or the top shelf of the bookshelf.
(Oh, hell. Is there any way to make the plot bunnies stop plotting?)

I blame seeing this on Monday and then dozing off while waiting to beta Sara's fic, but--my headcanon is, apparently, that Finch likes blueberries on, not in, his pancakes, and he's quite fond of crepes with lemon curd and blueberries. But he doesn't let himself eat them overmuch because lemon curd is mostly butter and sugar, and he'd have to get his favorite suits let out if he had it every day.

I guess this isn't 'small' fanon but I'm basically convinced it's canon, so: Nathan let Harold down gently very early on in their friendship. He wasn't a dick about it but he played perfectly straight and dated countless women at MIT -- except for that one night he got suuuuper drunk after a fight with his conservative probably-military old money father, and came onto Harold. Harold refused him (because wtf Nathan) and the next day Nathan pretended he didn't remember anything, so they never spoke of it again. But part of Harold never forgave him, even if he was too kind to let show how furious/disappointed/broken-hearted he really was. :( #nathanfeelings
